As Israel/US – Iran war casts a shadow over the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, football’s governing body is making one thing clear: the schedule stays.

Despite escalating military tensions following missile strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, FIFA officials have confirmed they have no intention of altering the tournament’s blueprint, even as the safety of participating nations comes into question.

Security Concerns at the Forefront

The controversy reached a boiling point following comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that the United States cannot guarantee the safety of Iranian officials on American soil given the current climate. Trump’s remarks sparked immediate debate, with the President essentially suggesting that it might be in Iran’s best interest to withdraw from the competition.

In a bid to remain in the tournament while ensuring the safety of their delegation, the President of Iran’s Football Federation revealed that negotiations had been opened with FIFA to relocate Iran’s scheduled matches from the U.S. to Mexico.

FIFA Stands Firm

However, those hopes for a venue swap appear to have hit a brick wall. In an interview with The Athletic, a FIFA spokesperson emphasized that the organization is sticking to the plan finalized late last year.

“FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including IR Iran, to discuss planning for the FIFA World Cup 2026,” the spokesperson stated. “FIFA is looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule announced on December 6, 2025.”

Key Takeaways:

The Venue: Iran’s matches are currently slated to remain in the United States.

The Conflict: Ongoing military action in the Middle East continues to complicate the logistical and diplomatic landscape of the tournament.

The Status: While FIFA is maintaining its “business as usual” stance, Iran’s actual participation remains a massive question mark as the conflict evolves.

With the world’s biggest sporting event just months away, the intersection of global politics and the “beautiful game” has never looked more precarious. Whether diplomacy can clear a path for the Iranian squad to take the pitch on U.S. soil remains to be seen.
