After years of quietly working behind the scenes in Ghana’s music industry, Gospel musician Royal Olu, known in real life as Rev. David Olu Thompson, is finally stepping into the spotlight with his debut official release.

If you have been around church choirs or music ministry circles in Ghana, chances are you may have crossed paths with Royal Olu without even knowing it. For years, he has been doing the quiet but important work — leading choirs, writing songs, mentoring young singers, and sharpening his craft. Now, the seasoned music minister is ready to let the world hear his voice with his debut Gospel single, BANBƆ, set to drop on Saturday, 27 June 2026.

A Life Built Around Music

Royal Olu’s love for music did not start in a studio. It started in school.

“Music has been part of my life since childhood,” he says. “During my school days, I was actively involved in the school choir, where I served as a part leader and later as an organizer.”

That foundation carried him into church, where he rose to become a choir leader and organizer. But singing was only part of his story. From a very young age, Royal Olu developed a deep passion for songwriting — and over the years, he has quietly built a catalogue of over 50 original songs, most of which are yet to be recorded and released.

“BANBƆ is my debut official release,” he says. “But over the years, I have written more than fifty original songs, many of which are yet to be recorded and released. By God’s grace, I look forward to sharing these songs with the world in the years ahead.”

He has also spent time teaching others — coaching people in vocal development, harmony, singing in key, and the craft of songwriting.

His hunger for growth even pushed him to audition on TV3’s Mentor talent platform, doing so in both Sunyani and Kumasi — a decision he says gave him valuable experience and exposure in the industry.

More Than a Career — A Calling

For Royal Olu, music is not something he does to make a living. It is something he was made to do.

“Music is not just something I do; it is a calling, a passion, and a ministry,” he says firmly. “It is a powerful tool for inspiring people, spreading hope, encouraging faith, and bringing glory to God.”

That perspective shapes everything about his approach to his craft. His songs, he explains, are not written in a vacuum. They come from real life — prayers answered, lessons learned, and encounters with God’s faithfulness.

“My inspiration comes from God, the Scriptures, personal experiences, prayer, life lessons, and the testimonies of people around me,” he says. “Many of my songs are born out of real-life situations, challenges, victories, and encounters with God’s grace.”

The Realities of Starting Out

Like many independent artists in Ghana, Royal Olu is candid about the challenges that come with breaking into the music industry, especially without the backing of a major label.

“One of the major challenges is financing quality music production, promotion, and content creation,” he admits. “Another challenge is gaining visibility in a highly competitive industry.”

On the question of whether Ghanaians support their own musicians enough, Royal Olu is measured but honest.

“Ghanaians support their musicians, and I appreciate everyone who supports local music,” he says. “However, I believe there is still room for stronger support from listeners, media houses, event organizers, and industry stakeholders. When we intentionally support our own, Ghanaian music can continue to compete successfully on the global stage.”

What Comes After BANBƆ

Royal Olu is not treating BANBƆ as an arrival — he sees it as a beginning.

“By God’s grace, I intend to release additional songs after BANBƆ,” he says. “My goal is to consistently release quality music that inspires, uplifts, and positively impacts lives.”

When it comes to future collaborations, he says he is open to working with Gospel artists — both male and female — whose values and vision align with his. He is not chasing clout; he is chasing impact.

“My focus is not just on popularity, but on meaningful collaboration that carries impact, inspires lives, and glorifies God,” he says. “In the future, I look forward to participating in all-star Gospel projects that bring different voices together for a greater purpose.”

And his five-year vision? Bold, faith-driven, and clear.

“In the next five years, I see my music reaching audiences across Ghana, Africa, and beyond,” he says. “I hope to have a strong catalogue of impactful songs, meaningful collaborations, major ministry opportunities, and a growing platform that uses music to transform lives, spread hope, and draw people closer to God.”

Royal Olu’s debut Gospel single BANBƆ drops on 27 June 2026. Keep an eye out for it across music platforms.
