Arrest Comes Hours After He Declared His Candidacy
The timing of the arrest has drawn attention. Just hours before he was picked up, Aboagye had publicly announced that he was running for the position of Director of Communications within the NPP.
He is widely known as one of the loudest and most outspoken critics of the current government.
NPP Issues Ultimatum
The NPP has given a clear ultimatum to EOCO and the government: either release Aboagye immediately and unconditionally, or bring him before a court of law without further delay, as required by the constitution.
The party also called on the authorities to stop what it described as a deliberate pattern of using arrests and prolonged detentions to weaken and intimidate members of the opposition.
In a warning directed at the heads of Ghana’s security agencies, the NPP reminded them that state institutions belong to the people and will outlive any government in power. The party added that Ghanaians are watching closely and taking note of everything that is happening.
