The long-held narrative of the Ashanti Region as an impenetrable fortress for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been shattered, according to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking during the party’s “Thank You Tour” on Wednesday, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah told a gathering of chiefs and supporters that the 2024 election results signal a permanent shift in Ghana’s political landscape.

He argued that the region has transitioned from an “exclusive stronghold” of the NPP to a competitive battleground where the NDC is rapidly gaining ground.

Breaking the “30% Ceiling”

For years, the NDC viewed a 28% vote share in the Ashanti Region as the “magic number” required to secure a national victory. However, the 2024 polls saw the party blow past that benchmark.

The Chairman highlighted two critical metrics that define this “new era” for the party in the region:

• Popular Vote: The NDC’s vote share surged past 30%, a significant leap from previous election cycles.

 • Parliamentary Presence: The party secured eight parliamentary seats, more than doubling its previous average of three to four seats.

“The results reflect a growing acceptance of the NDC among Ashanti voters,” Asiedu Nketiah noted, emphasizing that the region’s influence is now more pivotal than ever in determining who sits in the Jubilee House.

A Strategic Pivot

The Chairman attributed this success to a “deliberate and aggressive” expansion of the party’s campaign footprint. Unlike previous years where efforts were concentrated on a few “friendly” constituencies, the NDC 2024 strategy involved:

 • Total Coverage: Establishing a presence in every single district across the region.

• Community Engagement: Moving beyond rallies to direct dialogue with residents and traditional authorities.

• Sustained Presence: Committing to the region as a long-term priority rather than a seasonal campaign stop.

Gratitude to Traditional and Religious Leaders

Asiedu Nketiah was quick to share the credit, offering a “special thank you” to the traditional rulers and religious leaders of the Ashanti Region.

He acknowledged that their guidance, prayers, and willingness to engage with the party played a fundamental role in the NDC’s record-breaking performance.

He assured residents that the NDC’s involvement in the region is not a “one-off” achievement but a long-term commitment to represent the interests of the Ashanti people at the national level.
