The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially pulled the plug on Otto Addo’s second stint as head coach of the Black Stars. The decision follows a string of poor performances that lead to a disastrous March international window.

While expectations were high when Addo returned in March 2024 on a three-year deal, the honeymoon period ended abruptly in Europe this month. The Black Stars suffered two bruising defeats:

• Austria 5-1 Ghana (Vienna)

• Germany 2-1 Ghana (Stuttgart)

These results proved to be the final straw for the GFA hierarchy, who had brought Addo in to stabilize the team following Chris Hughton’s exit after the 2023 AFCON group-stage collapse.

Parting ways with the 48-year-old tactician won’t come cheap. Although the GFA has remained tight-lipped on the specifics, insiders suggest a hefty compensation package is on the table.

Otto Addo who was on a $50,000 monthly salary, is estimated to receive a $500,000 payoff, with approximately 10 months remaining on his contract.

During his tenure, Addo managed 22 matches, finishing with a record of 8 wins, 5 draws, and 9 defeats.

Who’s Next? The Shortlist Emerges

The GFA is under pressure to find a replacement quickly as the 2026 FIFA World Cup looms.

High-profile names are already circulating in the corridors of power:

● Hervé Renard: The two-time AFCON winner remains a fan favorite.

● Marc Brys: The experienced Belgian currently linked with the vacancy.

● Tom Saintfiet: A veteran of African football known for overachieving with smaller nations.

Road to the 2026 World Cup

The new coach will have little time to settle. The Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in May for two high-profile friendlies; the team faces Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.

Ghana has been drawn into Group L for the 2026 World Cup alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

After consecutive early exits in recent tournaments, the GFA is desperate to find a leader who can replicate the historic quarter-final run of 2010.
