Black Stars legend Asamoah Gyan has issued a stirring call to Ghana’s emerging football talents, urging them to not only chase his historic World Cup record but to surpass it.

The former captain, affectionately known as “Baby Jet,” took a reflective tone when discussing his career, balancing pride in his achievements with a genuine desire to see the next generation of Ghanaian strikers flourish on the global stage.

The Undisputed King of African World Cup Scoring

Since 2014, Gyan has stood alone at the summit of African football history.

With six goals across three consecutive tournaments, he remains the most prolific African marksman to ever grace the FIFA World Cup.

While many veterans might cling to their accolades, Gyan is taking a more selfless approach.

Speaking on his enduring legacy, he expressed a desire to see a new Ghanaian star rise to the occasion.

“For me, records are set to be broken,” Gyan stated. “Personally, I count myself lucky to be at that level… The only African to score six goals in World Cup history. And yes, the record is there to be broken. So I wish this new generation well.”

A Legacy Built on Big Moments

Gyan’s World Cup journey was defined by more than just the final tally.

His goals carried the weight of a nation’s aspirations across three iconic campaigns:

Germany 2006: Netted Ghana’s first-ever World Cup goal in a stunning win over the Czech Republic.

South Africa 2010: Propelled the Black Stars to a historic quarter-final finish, scoring crucial goals against Serbia, Australia, and the USA.

Brazil 2014: Surpassed Roger Milla’s long-standing record to become Africa’s all-time leading scorer in the competition.

A Passing of the Torch

As the Black Stars look to rebuild and nurture young stars like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo, Gyan’s message serves as both a blessing and a high-stakes challenge.

By openly inviting the younger crop to break his record, the legend is signaling that the ultimate goal is the progress of Ghanaian football, rather than individual glory.

The benchmark has been set at six. The question now is: who in the new generation has the hunger to reach seven?
