The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has introduced a new award scheme, the ‘FIFA Peace Prize’, to honour nations and individuals that contribute to global peace.
The award is intended to recognise individuals across the world who have made conscientious efforts to bring peace to conflict or war-stricken areas and help restore order.
“Who have taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and, by doing so, have united people across the world… and consequently deserve a special and unique recognition”, a statement from FIFA read.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino explained that in an era where some countries are engaged in conflicts and wars, it is prudent to honour individuals who make efforts to promote peace.
He also noted that since football abhors war, the award will inspire leaders around the globe to encourage others to foster cohesion.
“In an increasingly unsettled and divided world, it’s fundamental to recognise the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace”, Infantino was quoted as saying in the FIFA statement.
“Football stands for peace, and on behalf of the entire global football community, the FIFA Peace Prize, Football Unites the World, will recognise the enormous efforts of those individuals who unite people, bringing hope for future generations”, Infantino added.
The winner of the inaugural award is expected to be announced during the 2026 World Cup draw on December 5, 2025, in Washington, USA.
