President John Dramani Mahama has formally authorized a two-year tenure extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, securing his leadership of the Ghana Police Service beyond his anticipated retirement date.
IGP Yohuno was scheduled to take his statutory retirement in December 2025. This executive action ensures he will remain at the helm of the service through late 2027.
The directive was conveyed in an official letter dated November 25, 2025, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama.
The communication specifies that the re-engagement will take effect on December 28, 2025, immediately following his original retirement date.
Before this extension, the Inspector-General of Police had a long career in law enforcement.
The Presidency indicated that the decision rests heavily on the recommendation of the Police Council.
The Council reportedly expressed strong confidence in IGP Yohuno’s stewardship during a “critical period” for the security apparatus.
According to the letter, the President’s decision reflects a conviction that Yohuno’s continued leadership is paramount to “sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service.”
The IGP has been requested to provide written acceptance of the re-engagement within three days of receiving the official notification.
