In a significant step towards enhancing emergency medical services and optimizing response times, the National Ambulance Service (NAS) is actively pursuing the establishment of new ambulance stations in strategic locations across the country.

As part of this crucial initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of NAS, Dr George Kojo Owusu—accompanied by key management members and regional leadership from the Western Region—recently engaged in productive discussions with the Takoradi Airport Base Commander and his team.

Meeting Objectives

The primary objective of this meeting was to explore the feasibility of establishing a dedicated ambulance station at Takoradi Airport.

The discussions comprehensively covered essential logistical needs, including:

● Provision of suitable office space to ensure a fully operational, 24-hour presence for the ambulance crew.

● Alignment with the government’s “24-hour economy” agenda, ensuring seamless emergency coverage day and night.

Importance of an Ambulance Station at Takoradi Airport

The establishment of this station offers several compelling advantages for emergency preparedness and community well-being:

▪︎ Rapid Response to Aviation Incidents: Airports carry inherent risks; an on-site station ensures immediate medical attention during aircraft emergencies or health crises involving passengers and crew. This drastically reduces critical response times, which is often the difference between life and death.

▪︎ Enhanced Passenger and Staff Safety: With a constant flow of travelers and personnel, dedicated medical support provides a heightened sense of security. It ensures quicker aid for emergencies such as cardiac arrests, strokes, or traumatic injuries occurring within the premises.

▪︎ Support for Surrounding Communities: As the airport serves as a central hub, the station will provide crucial backup to surrounding peri-urban areas that might otherwise experience longer wait times.

▪︎ Facilitation of Medical Evacuations: For cases requiring urgent transfer to advanced facilities, an airport-based unit can swiftly coordinate with air medical services, ensuring seamless patient transfer from ground to air transport.

▪︎ Strategic Regional Hub: This location allows for more efficient deployment of resources across the Western Region, particularly given the area’s vital role in the oil and gas industry.

▪︎ Alignment with Safety Standards: This initiative demonstrates a proactive commitment to meeting national and international health and safety standards for critical infrastructure, bolstering public confidence.

The Roadmap Ahead

A clear roadmap with specific timelines is currently being developed to ensure the swift realization of this project. This initiative underscores NAS’s dedication to optimizing medical care and securing the health of the traveling public and the broader community.
